The fly fishing
calendar in Canterbury New Zealand
The New Zealand trout fishing season commences October
1st and ends April 30th.
October
The fly fishing can be quite successful during this month
as the fish have had very little disturbance and have completed
spawning. (Brown trout)
November
The high country waters open on the first Saturday and this
will bring some rainbow trout fishing onto the scene. Waters
are warming and some surface activity is beginning. (Dry
fly)
December
Rivers running into high country lakes (open on Dec 1st).
This generally means more rainbow trout fishing and water
temps are improving for dry fly fishing. This can be a very
good month preceding Christmas.
Many New Zealand fishermen are on holiday and are on the
water from around mid-December until mid-January, so solitary
fly fishing experiences can be more difficult during this
period.
January and February
Mid-January onwards can be quite good with high insect activity
and free-rising fish providing some exciting fishing.
March and April
Most fish have seen fishermen or have been caught and released
and can be wary. Fishing catches can be good with some larger
fish available in April as they move into smaller rivers
to spawn.
