Exclusive to lodge guests is Claremont’s unique and exhilarating Land Rover “safari” adventure. This is a treasure hunt that takes place on our own 2,400 acre estate and private nature reserve. This is complementary to those who stay three nights or more during the high season. Participating guests have a personally guided tour in a Range Rover equipped with mud-terrain tires. This is a combination of a farm tour, an off road driving experience and a geological odyssey.

Your guide will explain the pre-history of NZ and show guests some of the amazing geological features that have been unearthed on this remarkable property and have previously intrigued celebrated geologists and palaeontologists. The highlights include the stunning limestone escarpment that looks somewhat like the Great wall of China and has been caused by the Pacific Tectonic Plate uplift, the fascinating 1.0m round 65 million year old limestone spheres known as God's Marbles, the incredible "While Gorge" rock formations and the amazing giant "Bishops Head" natural rock sculpture and more...........

Over the last one hundred years at least significant 134 vertebrate fossils have been discovered - including the remains of Mossasaurs and Plesiosaurs, along with the remains of the worlds oldest Penguin and 17 species of pre-historic sharks. Who knows what you might discover? As recently as 2004 a complete Mossasaur head was found.

Not only does this morning's adventure offer you a combination of a New Zealand high country station (ranch) tour and off-road driving experience but you will also view some truly amazing geological discoveries. Getting there by Land Rover is half the fun. Wellies are supplied. Hats and sun-cream are recommended!
