A private nature reserve
like no other
Claremont’s guests have access to our farm within
an enchanted valley in the foothills of the Southern Alps,
the like of which you most surely have never seen!
Our 2,400 acre estate is both a working high country sheep
and deer station and a unique, private nature reserve. The
property is flanked by two rivers intertwined with craggy
escarpments, precipitous gorges, pretty waterfalls, amazing
rock formations, ancient boulders and rolling farmland.
Intertwined with braided rivers, craggy escarpments, precipitous
gorges, pretty waterfalls, amazing rock formations, ancient
boulders and rolling farmland, our 2,400 acre estate is
both a working high country sheep and deer station and a
unique, private nature reserve.
This ancient landscape includes the intriguing 65 million
years old “God´s marbles” Here is also
one of the few sites in the world where the “KT boundary”
is clearly visible.
This relatively recent discovery formed a crucial part
of the evidence as to the cause of the mass extinction causing
the end of the dinosaur period. Claremont was the first
place in New Zealand where significant
fossils were discovered. Plesiosaur’s,
Mosasaur’s and the world’s oldest penguins have
all been found in our riverbed.
Last, but not least, within Claremont’s private nature
reserve you’ll find abundant bird-life as well as
some seventy species of rare and endangered plants. There’s
a conservation area where you’ll see protected native
Black Beech, hosts to “honey dew”, undisturbed
native New Zealand bush.
A stay in the lodge provides the opportunity to participate
and discover the amazing secrets of this remarkable nature
reserve through our exhilarating fun-filled morning's
Land
Rover “Safari” adventure
- You can also walk, hike or, by prior arrangement take
a guided horseback ride over the estate.
