interest in food and wine and an international career in
journalism and television. Her book, Savour the South, a
guide to South Island food and wine producers was named
Food Book of the Year at the 2001 Food Writers Awards.
Canterbury, thanks to its climate, soil, nature’s
abundance and human skill produces highquality foods which
reflect the country and its changing seasons. From olive
oil to smoked salmon, farmhouse cheeses to artisan breads
and hand made chocolates, excellent Pinot Noirs to Sauvignon
Blancs, these products are made by people with a passion
for their craft, and engaging stories to tell.
This tour could take in Karikaas – makers of the
Champion Cheese at the 2005 NZ Cheese Awards, Havills traditional
honey mead, morning coffee and a tasting platter of North
Canterbury specialities at the Nor’Wester restaurant,
an ostrich farm, hazelnut orchard or olive grove and wine
tasting at a range of boutique wineries such as Mountford,
Muddy Water, Daniel Schuster and Bell Hill, with lunch at
the Pegasus Bay Winery, the award-winning winery café
in 2005.
Or part of this tour could be replaced with a cooking class
and lunch with celebrated chef Graham Brown at the Cookhouse
in Loburn.
